Car mileage check by VIN

Enter the VIN and see whether we have odometer readings for the car. The report lists all of them by year and flags any drop that should not be there.

Checking data availability is free.

How a mileage check works

A car's mileage gets written down many times over its life: at services, at roadworthiness tests, at a sale, in listings, when it is registered in another country. Each note keeps its date. Put in order, the readings should only go up. When a newer reading is lower than an older one, something is wrong.

That is what a VIN check does: it collects the readings found in 1000+ sources across 32 countries, sorts them and looks for drops. Nobody can certify a car's true mileage remotely, but a recorded reading higher than what the dashboard shows today is very hard to explain away.

What the report shows about mileage

Readings chart

Every reading found, on a timeline, with the drops marked.

Latest and highest reading

Compare them directly with the odometer of the car in the listing.

Kilometres per year

The average worked out from the readings, so you can see light, normal or heavy use.

Readings from abroad

For imported cars, the readings from before the import, when the sources have them.

Mileage verdict

Consistent, to check or possible tampering, with the explanation behind it.

The rest of the history

Damage, theft, finance, photos from old listings and technical data, in the same report.

How to read the result

The report puts one of four labels on the mileage. None of them is a final ruling: it is an automatic assessment of the data found, explained in the report.

Consistent
Each reading is higher than the one before. We found no drop beyond the analysis tolerance.
To check
One reading is lower than an older one, but the mileage then climbs back. Most of the time it is a figure noted wrongly at a service or inspection.
Possible tampering
The mileage drops and never recovers. This is the classic sign of a rolled-back odometer. Get a technical check before you pay.
Unconfirmed
The sources have no reading for this car. That says nothing bad about it, but it does not confirm the mileage either.

Why it matters for imported cars

A large share of used cars change country at least once. The national record in the new country starts at the first registration there, so official checks there, like the RAR AutoPass certificate in Romania, only see readings taken locally.

Rolled-back odometers show up often on cars sold across a border, because their history stays in the country they left. That is why the readings from the country of origin matter: they are in the VIN report when the sources have them.

What to check on the car itself

  • Steering wheel, gear knob, pedals and driver's seat: their wear should match the mileage on the dashboard.
  • The service book and invoices: dates and mileages should climb in order.
  • The sticker from the last oil change, usually on the door pillar or under the bonnet.
  • The memory of the control units: a garage can read the mileage stored in modules other than the dashboard.

Frequently asked questions

Can I check the mileage for free?

The first step is free: enter the VIN and see the make and whether we have data for that car. The odometer readings, with dates and the chart, are in the full report, from 14.30 €.

Will I find out the car's true mileage?

You see the readings recorded over time and whether any of them drops below an older one. Nobody can certify the true mileage remotely. But if the latest reading in the report is higher than what the dashboard shows now, you have clear proof that something does not add up.

Are readings from Germany shown for a car imported from there?

Yes, when the sources have them. The report searches 1000+ sources in 32 countries, and the readings from before the import appear on the same timeline as the later ones.

What should I do if the report says “Possible tampering”?

Show the seller the chart and ask for an explanation and the service invoices. Before paying, take the car to a garage that can read the mileage stored in the electronic modules. If the gap stays unexplained, that is a serious reason to walk away or negotiate.

Why does the mileage say “Unconfirmed”?

We found no reading for that VIN in the sources. It happens mostly with very new cars or cars with a short history in the countries covered. The rest of the report still stands, and you confirm the mileage from the service book.
